and Urban Playgrounds, 1996

DVD available for sale

whitey on tuba, blanquito

This DVD is from EE shows from 1995-1996. Some awesome playground, guerilla net/swing/gondola installations, with music, and other playground equipment and performance goodies thrown in.

These are classic art environments built by Dave Christensen, Mike Smith, and those who were part of EE at the moment. Nets and swings over the Chicago river; zipline rides over a net on an island in Chicago's Humboldt Lagoon, and a giant playground built on an abandoned lot for a New Years party are the events.

This DVD contains edited video footage, a photo slide show, and text interview with the Chicago art/performance group Environmental Encroachment. CLASSIC STUFF. These were some death-defying art happenings!

The Limited Release of this DVD (100 copies) coincides with the ten year anniversary of EE co-founder Dave Christensen. His intensity in creation was incomparable.

7 tracks: 80 minutes total

TRACKS:
1. Humboldt Island Net and Zip-line Installation
Island in Humboldt Park Lagoon, Chicago, 1996, 20 min.

An island that only children, hard-core fisherman, and junkies would wade to in Chicago's dangerous (then) Humboldt Park. EE took days to scout and set up ladders, leading to an elevated set of nets and a long zip line ride, that would drop you into the hammock of the nets. Dave C. provided a four-person bike ride through the park with some local children as well.

2.
18th street Bridge installation
Chicago River and 18th street drawbridge, 1996, 18 min.

An ambitious installation over water did not allow us to use ladders. We climbed within the bridge girders, and installed two nets and a swing, before the drawbridge went up with the nets!, We continued to play as the nets came down, then the police showed up!

3. Playopolis New Years Installation of
Chicago River and 16th street bridge embankment, 1996, 30 min

Nets, the mobile, rotating see-saw, ee's Gondola and Zip rides, music, fire, four-person bike rides, fire, snow, and even Zolton the dog.

4. 3LEE, Three Level Playground, Built at Dave's House, Chicago
2614 West Division Street, Chicago, 1996, 15 min.

The see-saw was installed so that part of the ride took you out over the three-story roof-ledge. The zipline ride went from the porch to the garage roof. We installed a pool and light fountain, with plexi-flooring over it, and the net over that, what else?.

5. RARE early video clips from our 1997 demo
some old and funny stuff!, 5 min.

6. Photo slide show of these shows
most photos taken as art documentation by Mike Smith

7. Interview with EE in Lumpen Times Magazine, 1996
A nice long interview conducted by Che Maraschino for Lumpen's Apocalypse Issue
